India has entered a new era of space exploration with the successful launch of Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital rocket. Developed by Skyroot Aerospace, the Hyderabad-based space startup, the rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR), Sriharikota, under its maiden orbital mission, Mission Aagaman. The mission successfully placed multiple payloads into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), proving that India's private companies are now capable of designing, building, and launching orbital-class rockets.

Founded in 2018, Skyroot Aerospace was established by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. Their vision was to make space more accessible through affordable, reliable, and frequent satellite launches. The company first gained national attention in 2022 when it successfully launched Vikram-S, India's first privately built suborbital rocket. Vikram-1 now marks the company's first successful orbital mission and one of the biggest achievements in India's commercial space sector.

The rocket is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, widely regarded as the father of India's space programme. Standing approximately 22 metres tall, Vikram-1 can carry payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms into Low Earth Orbit. The rocket uses a three-stage solid-fuel configuration, lightweight carbon-composite structures, advanced avionics, and several 3D-printed components, reducing manufacturing time while increasing efficiency and reliability.

One of the mission's most unique payloads was Cosmic Bloom, a lotus-shaped artwork designed by Bengaluru-based Cosmos Diamonds. The payload contains 32 laboratory-grown diamonds weighing a combined 16.95 carats, mounted on a specially engineered aluminium structure capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of launch. Alongside it flew an 18-karat gold miniature rocket carrying microscopic sculptures of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, and Sir C. V. Raman, celebrating some of India's greatest scientific minds.

Beyond its symbolic payloads, Vikram-1 also carried several technology demonstration missions. These included SCOPE, Skyroot Aerospace's onboard technology demonstrator, SOLARAS, a CubeSat developed by Grahaa Space, Embrace, a robotic arm demonstration by Cosmoserve Space Technologies, and technology payloads from German aerospace company DCubed. These missions demonstrate the growing collaboration between Indian startups and international partners in developing advanced space technologies.

The success of Vikram-1 follows the Government of India's decision in 2020 to open the space sector to private participation. Since then, organizations such as ISRO and IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre) have supported private companies by providing technical expertise, launch infrastructure, and regulatory guidance. Their combined efforts have accelerated the growth of India's commercial space ecosystem.

This mission also places India among a select group of nations where private companies have successfully developed and launched orbital rockets. As demand for launching small satellites continues to grow worldwide for communication, navigation, weather forecasting, Earth observation, and scientific research, companies like Skyroot Aerospace are expected to play a major role in the future of global commercial spaceflight.
